Computer users will spend more than $US3 billion over the next three
years on security software to combat a rise in computer-related
offenses such as hacking, a computer analysis company said Tuesday.

A report by International Data Corporation said the market for
security software was set to reach $US3.397 billion in 2004, up from
$US266 million in 1999, as enterprises rush to protect themselves from
a rise in corporate espionage and computer hacking.

It said security breaches such as vandalised Web sites, computer
viruses, information theft and denial of service at electronic
commerce and support sites were the main problems for corporations.

Last year, computer viruses Melissa and the Lovebug swept the computer
world and closed down infected computers until programs were written
to combat them.

"IDC predicts a whole new range of viruses and malicious applets,
which will creep into many enterprises," said Natasha David, a senior
analyst at IDC.

The report said most computer users would concentrate their security
dollars on intrusion detection and finding out how vulnerable their
systems were. - AP
