The Electronic Industries Alliance (EIA) has formed a new alliance
with the nation's top federally funded computer security group in an
effort to help companies evade computer security threats online.

The new partnership, dubbed the Internet Security Alliance, will draw
upon the collaborative efforts of EIA member companies and computer
security experts at Carnegie Mellon's Software Engineering Institute
in Pittsburgh, the same unit that hosts the university's CERT Centers,
a research and development organization sponsored by the Department of
Defense.

In addition to providing early warning of emerging security threats,
the group plans to hold seminars on pressing security issues to
educate senior managers and board members about the importance of
computer security vigilance.

EIA President Dave McCurdy said the alliance also hopes to raise
awareness about the nature and frequency of computer crimes that may
fly under the radar screen of the mainstream press but nevertheless
represent just as severe a threat to corporate security and
productivity.

"In the rush to benefit from using the Internet, organizations often
overlook significant risks," McCurdy said, noting that most corporate
security practices are "underdeveloped, poorly disseminated or
erratically followed.

The alliance will be headquartered in EIA's backyard in Arlington,
Va., and is scheduled to open its doors April 1, 2001.
