Rob,
We have been using PatchLink Update for about an year now and overall
have been very happy. It has the ability to scan for and update
Microsoft and non-Microsoft products including Adobe, WinZip,
Macromedia, Computer Associates, Citrix, McAfee, Symantec and a few
others. It also includes support for operating systems from Red Hat,
Sun, and Apple. You are also given the ability to create and push out
custom updates for other applications, although I have not used that
feature yet.
One of the best features we use, is the ability to create groups of
computers that are assigned a list of mandatory patches. If a computer
in that group does not have a mandatory patch it is automatically
installed. You can also set the agents to only operate during non
business hours so patches can be installed without interfering with
users. Recently we were able to get all our XP workstations updated
using these features and did not affect a single user. It took less than
5 minutes to setup the whole process, which is not bad when you need to
deploy over 40 patches.
The one thing I find a little weak is the reporting, but it has improved
a little over time. The first version we used (v4.0) had no reports.
The current version has some general overview reports on the number of
patched installed and the number of systems fully patched. However, more
reports are scheduled to be included in the new version due out in May
(last I checked).
More information can be found on their website
http://www.patchlink.com/.
Hope that helps,
David Price

Subject: Scanning Microsoft and Non-Microsoft product vulnerabilities
Hello,
I need some guidance regarding a patch scanning and deployment tool
which includes support for Microsoft and Non-Microsoft apps (i.e.
Documentum, BEA, Real, Quicktime, Adobe, WinZip, Macromedia, etc.).
Does anyone know if a current product has this breadth of patch scanning
and deployment functionality?
Thanks in advance,
Rob.
