We just configure a local squid proxy to cache only windows update sites.
So on systems we need to manually install patches, I just set the proxy in
internet explorer.
Then go to windows update, download install updates...
Takes about 5 seconds to download 80 megs of updates from a local proxy.
Works great, we use it all over our campus.
