Hi G,
Essentially servers are the same as PCs in the way that you set them up to use SUS. You can have SUS update your servers automatically with the same settings as the PCs, but I wouldn't.
The point about it, is that if you have an automated patch deployment strategy for your servers, then you could bust up your whole production environment in a number of ways.
First of all, if you have a patch that breaks and application running on one of your servers, then you are out of action in a big way till you either roll back (If possible) or you restore from backup.
Secondly, if your servers are automatically restarted at the end of a patch install, who knows when your servers are going to be unavailable for your users. I would use the option to download and not install, or to install but not reboot if you really need to do it this way.
So the answer to your question "Server's patch management cannot be automated, can it?" is yes. It can but be careful as to which deployment method you use.

Hope this helps,
Si.

Hi All,

I have a very important question to all of you. We deployed SUS in our
environment on more then 5000+ PC's. So we have solved the automated patch
deployment.
But I am not sure how to patch servers. What processes to use or have in
place.
Server's patch management cannot be automated, can it?
But we have more 100+ servers. Do I need to patch them manually?

How do you guys handle server's patch management issues?

Best regards,

G.
