Democracy sounds like a great system - maybe we **should** try it some time.
Until then, the power of the whips and the power of the services mean that
what we actually have is a system of electing front men for an interlocking
set of semi-permanent power oligarchies.
But somehow we have to solve the problem (which you snipped off): how
can we make the right decision about <today's issue: Is it better for a
kid to have an unstated probability of dying as a teenager of colon
cancer, or never to have been born> [1] when the public has issue
fatigue, let alone the willingness to properly research the subject.
[1] Or is it legalising casinos; busy day today.
